ATM & Debit Card Safety

Keep Your Cards Safe

Protect your cards and account information with these recommendations.

Using an ATM

  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. If you see anything suspicious, avoid using the machine at that time.
  • Have your Debit Card ready and in your hand as you approach the ATM.
  • Inspect the ATM for possible skimming devices. Sticky residue or evidence of an adhesive used by fraudsters to affix the device, scratches, damaged or crooked pieces or extra attachments on the card slot, or noticeable resistance when pressing the keypad, could all indicate that a skimming device was installed.
  • Make sure that no one can see you enter your PIN at the ATM. You can use your body or other hand to block the view of the ATM keyboard.
  • To keep your account information confidential, always take your receipt with you.
  • Do not count or show the money you received from the ATM. Immediately put it away and count it later.
  • If you are using a drive-up ATM, be sure passenger windows are rolled up and all doors are locked. If you leave your car and walk to the ATM, lock your car.
  • When using an ATM at night, park close to the ATM in a well-lit area. Take another person with you, if possible.
  • If the lights at the ATM are not working, don't use it.
  • If the view of the ATM is blocked by shrubbery or trees, use another ATM and let the bank know.

Protecting Your Debit Card

  • Always keep your Debit Card in a safe place. No one but you should have access to your card.
  • Immediately notify the bank if it is lost or stolen.
Keep your Personal Identification Number (PIN) confidential. Don’t share it with anyone, including the bank.
  • Never give any information about your Debit Card over the telephone unless you initiated the call and want to pay for a purchase.
  • Sign up for Debit Card Alerts. Receive a notification anytime you use your Crews Bank & Trust VISA® Debit Card. This can help alert you of any suspicious activity.
